High flow filter elements are designed to accommodate significantly higher fluid flow rates compared to standard filters. Depending on the application requirements, different high flow filter element types offer varying balances of flow rate capability, pressure drop, filter life and filtration efficiency.
The main types of high flow filter elements are:
Pleated Cartridge Filters
Pleated cartridge filters are the most common type of high flow filter element. They consist of multiple tightly packed accordion-shaped filter media packs that increase the overall surface area within a compact volume.
Pleated filters can achieve relatively high flow rates with moderate pressure drops. However, the risk of media pleat damage and leaks increases at higher flow rates.
They are used widely in industrial, commercial and residential HVAC applications as well as liquid filtration systems. Pleated filters are easy to install and replace but generally have lower dirt holding capacities.
Depth Cartridge Filters
Depth filters use a single layer or multiple layers of thicker filter media to achieve higher flow rates. The thicker media provides a larger filtering surface area within the same cross-sectional footprint.
Depth cartridge filters typically offer the lowest pressure drops and highest flow rates of all filter elements, at the cost of lower filtration efficiencies. However, they are suited for applications that require prolonged service intervals between filter changes.
They are used in heavy industrial applications like power generation, oil & gas processing, chemical processing and water filtration. Depth cartridges have good dirt holding capacities and long service lives.
String Wound Filters
String wound filters consist of narrow filter media strips wound around a center core in a spiral fashion. As fluid passes through the grooves between winding strips, a large surface area is exposed for filtration.
String wound filters offer a good balance of flow rate, pressure drop and filter life. They can achieve relatively high flow rates, especially in the axial direction.
These filters see use in liquid filtration applications like engine oil filtration, hydraulic fluid filtration, machine tool coolant filtration and lubrication systems. String wound filters have medium to high dirt holding capacities.
Roll Filters
Roll filters use a continuous roll of filter media wrapped around a central core. The fluid passes through the media thickness, providing a high surface area within a compact volume.
Roll filters can achieve some of the highest flow rates of all filter elements due to their open interior design. However, they suffer from lower filtration efficiencies compared to other filter types.
Roll filters are best suited for applications that require low pressure drops, high flow rates and can tolerate lower filtration performance. They work well for liquid filtration in industrial processes and wastewater treatment applications. Roll filters have high dirt holding capacities.
Membrane Filters
Membrane filters use a thin semipermeable membrane to separate particles from fluid based on size. They offer very high flow rates due to the open interior design and large filtration surface area.
Membrane filters can achieve extremely fine filtration levels, filtering particles below 1 micron in size. However, they are more prone to fouling and require frequent cleaning and replacement.
Membrane filters see use in industrial processes that require microfiltration or ultrafiltration capabilities. They are also common in bio processing, pharmaceutical, food & beverage and medical device applications. Membrane filters typically have lower effective dirt holding capacities.
In summary, there are many different types of high flow filter elements available today tailored to specific applications requirements. The optimal filter element type depends on the desired balance of flow rate capacity, pressure drop tolerance, filtration efficiency needs and service life for your application.
